Many people in relationships find it challenging to communicate with their romantic partners. However, communication is a vital part of every relationship. Communication allows couples to express their wants, needs, likes and dislikes to each other while also helping to build strong intimate connections. While all relationships have their ups and downs, a lack of loving communication can and will destroy both the friendship and intimacy that couples share. Often times, a lack of communication can cause one or both partners to grow cold and distant; especially if there is a fear of being open and honest about ones feelings. If your partner is distancing himself or herself from your relationship, is it due to a lack of communication or are there other factors at play?
FOR MAN IS OFTEN DISTANT DUE TO LOSS OF FREEDOM
WOMAN ARE OFTEN DISTANT WHEN THEY DONT FEEL FREE
While both men and women often feel a loss of freedom while in a relationship, men are more susceptible, as most men need and want their space. Often times, couples that enter into a new relationship, will focus and indulge their attentions on their new romance, often neglecting their individualities. They will seclude themselves, spending less time with family and friends. Careers may suffer as well because one or both partners become less ambitious. However, over time, when the relationship is no longer new, one or both partners may begin to feel claustrophobic and trapped. They may make a temporary emotional or physical sprint from the relationship for a breath of fresh air. This sudden action may leave your partner feeling confused and unwanted. When counseling new couples, I advise them of the importance of space and individuality. A healthy relationship does not stifle nor does it isolate.
MAN GET DISTANT WHEN THEY NOT FEELING APPRECIATED
You do not have to be alone to feel alone. Many couples do not know how to express themselves to their partners and it may seem that they are being unappreciative or selfish. Couples need to learn how to express themselves correctly and show their appreciation for each other. Thank them for everything they do, even if it is something small. Ask them how their day is going and listen to what they have to say. Send them daily text messages letting them know you’re thinking of them.
WOMAN NEED COMPLIMENTS & AFFIRMATIONSALL THE TIME
After the initial honeymoon stage of a relationship, when those butterfly feelings have fluttered away, both men and women may begin to take their relationship for granted. They may become too comfortable and stop complimenting each other. And, the romantic gestures may cease. It may seem that one or both partners no longer desires the other. This stage is critical in a relationship and your actions and words can make or break your relationship. Take the time to surprise your partner with romantic gestures and adoring compliments. Never stop showing how much you admire, respect and appreciate your partner.
MAN HATE FEELING CONTROLLED
No one likes being told how to dress, what to eat, who to communicate with or who to be friends with. When in a loving relationship it’s important to allow your partner to be who they are, and trust them to make the right choices. Don’t try to mold them into becoming a character you once watched in a great romantic movie or read about in a best-selling romance novel. In truth, many partners do criticize each other. However, it should not be a consistent action. I always tell my clients, not to offer any advice to their partner unless they ask for it. And, if they ask, be very careful of words and tone. And, do not nag. After all, NO ONE likes a nag. Always show your partner that you love and support them in all things positive.
WOMAN GO DISTANT WHEN THEY NOT FEELING UNDERSTOOD
When in a relationship, it’s important to express your feelings properly and clearly to your partner. Often times, couples express their feelings with negative emotions. They may be looking for empathy or emotional support they simply do not know how to relay this to their partners. Showing emotional support and a desire to understand your partner is extremely important in a relationship.
MAN GO DISTANT WITH LACK OF SEX
When one person loses their desire to have sex in the relationship, their partner may become confused and frustrated. They may feel unwanted or undesirable. Often times, a lack of sexual desire is not a sign of falling out of love, but rather it could be a sign of depression, stress, problems at work, fatigue and etc. What ever the reasons may be, it should be communicated properly to your partner. Professional help if needed. Having sex is healthy, and when in a committed relationship, enhances the connection with our partners and deepens our bond.
MEETING SOMEONE NEW
Let’s face it no relationship is set in stone. Chances are, your partner may meet someone new. And, they may or may not tell you. If you suspect that your partner has met someone else, don’t be afraid to ask. Remember, communication is key. Relay your suspicions to your partner. He or she may be come clean or they may not. They may decide to end their relationship with you, or they may simply vanish or ‘ghost’ you. In any case, if your partner is into someone else, then let your partner go. Life is too short to hang onto someone who does not want to be with you. You are valuable and you are worthy of all things great!
